Polar Express

December 11 - 13, 2009

What a terrific weekend we had up north with friends and family! Three years ago, our family hitched a ride on the Polar Express, that was when Nathan was 6 months old and Natalie only 3 years old. Well, what a difference 3 years can make! Both the kids were really into it this year and it was wonderful to be with such great friends too. Since planning this back in the summer, all the families had time to buy matching jammies for the kids to wear while on the train (a tradition most families follow on the Polar Express). After an afternoon full of sledding, we headed back to our cabin and enjoyed a big dinner of chili and then headed to the train. The kids were all very excited! Once on the train, we stepped into the magical world of the Polar Express and as Chris Van Allsburg puts it in his book, "the train was filled with other children, all in their pajamas and nightgowns. We sang Christmas carols and ate candies with nougat centers as white as snow. We drank hot cocoa as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars. Outside, the lights of towns and villages flickered in the distance as the Polar Express raced northward." As we drew closer to the North Pole all the kids peered out their windows to catch a glimpse of Santa and before we knew it we were headed back home. Lucky for us, Santa hopped on for a ride back and all the kids were able to see him and receive a magical bell from Santa himself. As the book states, as long as you can hear the bell ringing then you truly believe in the magic of Christmas and Santa. I want to embrace that with my kiddos as long as I can! What a wonderful time!
